In case you haven't heard, another British invasion is hitting the U.S., and it's hitting Eagle Rock! Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market will be opening soon at Eagle Rock Blvd. and W. Avenue 42, the former site of Albertson's (or Lucky's, depending on how long you've lived around here). It appears to be a competitor to Trader Joe's, with a slight dabble in the Whole Foods monopoly, but we'll see. I haven't visited any of the other locations which have opened in southern California, but my ears are open. I hear another one is opening in nearby Alhambra.
According to the Boulevard Sentinel (April 2007), F&E will carry a "full range of household products and fresh foods. Since they are smaller stores, they just won't carry as many brands as say, a Vons or a Ralph's might."
Look for pre-cooked, pre-packed "home replacement meals," as well as fresh-cut flowers and organic food. As of the April issue of the Sentinel, F&E is slated to open between September and November of this year.
Speaking of monopoly, Whole Foods bought out the Wild Oats on California and Lake Avenue, but no word yet as to what will happen to the beloved Wild Oats. At this rate, it sounds like F&E will open before the new Whole Foods will open on Arroyo Parkway. Word on the street is the Whole Foods on Arroyo will open in November. I'm tapping my fingers on my table every day in anticipation.
